Ten Things That Make PR Pros and Agencies Quietly Lose Their Minds
Let’s be honest — public relations is equal parts strategy, timing, and relationship management. But there are a few recurring scenarios that can make even the most patient, accommodating PR professionals – like us – cringe just a bit:
1. Missing a reporter’s deadline — or sending us the requested info right at the deadline, leaving no time to fine-tune the message.
2. Asking us to pitch something purely promotional. Reporters don’t exist to publish ads (although see 7, below) ; they’re here to tell stories with value.
3. Forgetting to acknowledge great coverage. No “thank you,” no tag for the PR team, reporter, or outlet when sharing on social — a missed opportunity for everyone.
4. Neglecting to amplify earned media. Securing coverage is half the marathon; how you promote and repurpose it determines gets you to the finish line.
5. Canceling a media interview at the last minute after being prepped and briefed. It damages credibility and relationships that take years to build.
6. Asking us to have a reporter delete something you said on record.
7. When a journalist requests an interview or site visit and then asks if the client will place an ad…why must we live in a world where storytelling and sales blur like this?
8. Former clients asking for reporter contacts or “just a few ideas.” You wouldn’t ask your home builder to add a new room for free. Same principle here.
9. Influencers who attend an event or dinner and then don’t post content…or even take a photo, for that matter.
10. RSVP-ing and then not showing up. Just an acknowledgement would be appreciated.
PR works best when there’s mutual respect, clear communication, and trust — between clients, agencies, and the media. When those align, everyone wins. Whether you are a reporter, influencer, client, or a PR person’s boss, avoid the above, and you’ll thrive!
