ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP ADAPTIVE SNOWBOARDERS, NICOLE ROUNDY, HONORED AT 2016 UTAH GOVERNOR’S STATE OF SPORTS AWARDS

SALT LAKE CITY – Forty-four of Utah’s most accomplished athletes and coaches for the 2015 calendar year were honored at last month’s 2016 Governor’s State of Sport Awards, hosted by the Utah Sports Commission and presented by Zions Bank. Accomplished adaptive snowboader and motivational speaker Nicole Roundy, a Utah native and Paralympic athlete, was named Adaptive Female of the Year. 127,000 votes from sports fans in all 50 states and 90 countries around the world determined a winner in nine voting categories.

In 2006, Roundy became the first above-knee amputee to compete in adaptive snowboarding. Her accomplishments spearheaded global demand for prosthetic knee technology, and she played a pivotal role in the addition of snowboarding to the Paralympic roster. Nicole represented the U.S. in the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games and is a 17-time World Cup Medalist. Nicole is currently ranked as one of the top adaptive snowboarders in the world.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this award from the Utah governor’s office,” says Nicole Roundy. “I hope my dedication to being an athlete and motivational speaker will continue to inspire others to overcome their own obstacles in all aspects of their lives. I’m looking forward to more competition on the snow and sharing my story through speaking engagements for corporate groups as well as students and athletes.”

This summer, Nicole will be the recipient of a new, state-of-the-art prosthetic knee from her sponsor Össur. She is playing an integral role in the launch and can be seen in the Icelandic company’s promotional video demonstrating how the prosthetic enhances her active lifestyle. She also has several speaking engagements and will make an appearance at the 14th Annual Gatorade Athlete of the Year Ceremony on July 12th in Los Angeles, CA.

About Nicole Roundy
In 1994, at just eight years old, Nicole Roundy was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer. After aggressive chemotherapy, her right leg was amputated above the knee. She participated in various sports growing up and was introduced to three track skiing in 2002. Her love for the adrenaline associated with the sport motivated her to defy the “impossible” and learn to snowboard. Just four years later, she became the first above-knee amputee to compete in adaptive snowboarding, taking home a silver medal from the United States National Championships. She went on to compete in World Cup snowboard cross, slopestyle, slalom and halfpipe events and in 2014 placed 8th in the Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi. Nicole is a motivational speaker and an advocate for both The National Ability Center and The Challenged Athletes Foundation. Schools, universities and global corporations routinely engage Nicole to speak and inspire. The 30 year-old athlete encourages others to live an active, healthy lifestyle. Her summer activities include CrossFit, yoga, hiking, wakeboarding, and paddleboarding, all of which keep her fit for winter competitions.
